How to Set Up a Double End Bag at Home
A double end bag could well be one of the hardest types of punching bags to set up.
Annoyingly, they’re an integral part of any fighters training.
This means we’ve got to roll up our sleeves, get our DIY hats on and get this thing set up.
Fortunately, you’ve come to the right place.
This article is going to walk your through exactly how to set up a double end at home, ready to be used and abused.
Let’s get to it.
Decide How You’re Going to Anchor the Bag
First things first, we’ve got to decide which method we’re going to use to get the double end bag set up. There’s a few different ways to do this that I’ll discuss below.
Using a Stand
The first, and probably the easiest method is using a stand. That said, these tend to take up a lot of space, are expensive and limit the amount of room you’ve got to move around the bag.
There’s a couple of different types of stands that you can use to set up your double end bag. For example, there’s stands out there specifically designed for double end bags, however I’ve found that these aren’t too good.
If you do decide to use a stand, I would recommend a traditional heavy bag stand, or even a heavy bag wall mount alongside a weighted floor anchor. This way, you don’t have to worry about causing any damage to the floor or ceiling.
That said, some of the cheaper floor anchors can slide around, especially if you’re hitting the bag with a good amount of power. With that in mind, if you take this route, it’s probably a good idea to go with a reputable brand such as Ringside or Outslayer, as those tend to be the best.
Attaching to the Floor & Ceiling
Lastly’ we’ve got attaching the double end bag directly into the floor and ceiling. Obviously, drilling holes into the floor is going to create some lasting damage, however provides the most stability for the bag.
How to Set Up a Double End Bag
In this guide, we’re going to be taking a look at these two methods that you can use to install your double end bag at home.
Method 1: Anchoring Directly to Floor and Ceiling
What You’ll Need
The equipment you’ll need will vary depending on the type of double end bag you buy.
If this is your first double end bag, I’d recommend getting one that comes with all the required mounting fixtures, cables and screws.
This way, you don’t have to worry about getting the correct ones from a hardware store.
If you haven’t got one yet, check out are guide on the best double end bags, which covers some pretty awesome options.
That said, typically you will need:
- Pencil/ marker
- Drill
- Double end bag
- Bungee cord/ elasticated material
- 2 X surface mount D rings
- Plumb bob
- Screw driver
Step 1: Find a place to set up your double end bag, making sure that you’ll have enough room to move around the bag once it’s set up. At this point, it’s important to be sure that surface is stable enough to take the weight and pressure of the bag when you’re using it.
Step 2: Using a pencil, mark on the ceiling the location of the top anchor point.
Step 3: Use your plumb bob to find the position of the bottom anchor point. Then mark on the floor the exact this exact position.
Step 4: Using a drill, make a hole for the top and bottom D-rings over the markers you have drawn. Screw in your D-rings.
Step 5: Attach your bungee cord to the top anchor, and then fasten the other end to the double end bag.
Step 6: Attach the other bungee cord to the bottom of the double end bag, then fasten the other side of the cord to your bottom anchor.
Step 7: Adjust the height of the double end bag so that’s inline with your shoulders.
Method 2: Using a Stand and Weighted Base
This next method requires far less handy work, however will cost more due to the fact that you’ll need to buy a stand a base.
That said, if you’ve already got a heavy bag set up at home, you’ll be able to use the same stand that you use for that.
What you need:
- Heavy bag stand or wall mount
- Double end bag with bungee cords
- Double end bag weighted floor base
All you need to do is attach the double end bag the stand using the bungee cord.
Place the double ended bag weight base underneath the bag itself, then attach the two together using the other bungee cord.
You can also place some other weighted objects over the base to help fix it in position.
Using Your Double End Bag
Using a double end bag definitely has a pretty steep learning curve.
However, despite being an incredibly handy piece of equipment, they can take some getting used to, especially if you’ve never used one before.

If you haven’t got the time to read out guide, here’s a few quick tips to get you started:
- Double end bags about technique, taming and accuracy - not power. Don’t load up your punches too much, as you’ll find the bag swings too wildly to hit.
- Keep things simple - If you’re using the double end bag for the first time, start with simple combinations to begin with. Once you’ve got these down, starting mixing up your strikes.
Remember your footwork - don’t just plant your feet in front of the bag, remember to implement your footwork and move around whilst your work the bag.
- If you're finding it hard, increase the tension - if you make the cord a bit tighter, the bag will swing and rebound a lot less, making it easier to land your punches.
